Effect of dietary essential fatty acids on egg quality and larviculture success of the greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i> F.): preliminary results OMA
Dhert, P.; Lim, L.C.; Lavens, P.; Chao, T.M.; Chou, R.; Sorgeloos, P..
In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i>) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated.

Effects de le temperature et du regime alimentaire sur certains parametres de l'immunite cellulaire du loup de mer en elevage ArchiMer
Deschaux, P; Peres, G.
The data showed that antibody response and NK cells activity of a teleostean fish Dicentrarchus labrax (Loup de mer) were maximal when animals were bred at a temperature equal to 18 degree C. A proteinoprive diet enhanced T cytotoxic response and diminished NK cell activity. A fast of 15 days had no effect on these two cellular responses.

Effects of temperature on growth and metabolism in a Mediterranean population of European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Mahe, Kelig; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Delliou, Herve.
Growth and metabolism of juvenile European sea bass of a Western Mediterranean population were assessed at six constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25 or 29 degreesC) in an 84-day trial. Duplicated groups of 84 fish (initial weight 80 I g) were held under O-2-concentrations close to saturation (87 mg l(-1)) and were fed to satiation. Mass gain increased as temperature increased from 13 to 25 degreesC. At 25 and 29 degreesC, growth was similar up to day 72, but a 6% decrease was observed by day 84 at 29 degreesC. Days 0-84 specific growth rates (SGR) were 0.45%,1.29% and 1.21% day(-1) at 13, 25 and 29 degreesC, respectively. The estimated temperature (7) for maximum SGR was 26 degreesC (SGR = 1.715 - 0.322T + 0.022T(2) - 4.233e(-4)T(3)). Feed intake (FI)...

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer
Watanabe, T.
Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .

Bac, N; Biagianti, S; Brusle, J.
In the three species Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus auratus , and Anguilla anguilla an artificial feeding (dry pellets) disturbs liver cells as revealed at ultrastructural level. In hepatocytes, anomalies consist of lipids storage (liposomes) considered as deviation in fatty acids metabolism. Moreover are observed cellular alterations (mitochondrial vacuolization, nuclear pycnosis) related to degenerative process. It is of great interest to understand wether liver modifications are just a reaction to an unbalanced feeding or a true trophic pathology.

Genetics of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) ArchiMer
Chatain, Beatrice; Chavanne, Herve.
The production of sea bass, a major species in Mediterranean fish farming, still relies in many cases on the production of fingerlings issued from wild breeders. Still, genetic improvement is a major key to sustainable development for all optimized forms of animal production. Three types of genetic improvement can be acheived in fish: i) the production of monosex populations. For seabass, monosex female populations would be the objective as females grow 20-30% faster than males. However, sex determination in this species is complex, impacted by both genetic and environmental factors. Hence, production of monosex populations is not yet a routine operation, although in some cases almost 100% female batches have been obtained; ii) chromosome set...

Grow-out mariculture techniques in tropical waters: A case study of problems and solutions in Hong Kong. ArchiMer
Wu, R; Lee, J.
Raft culture is practised and trash fish is being used as feed in Hong Kong. Culture space is limited and most of the culture sites are over-crowded. Food conversion ratio is poor (about 10-15), grow-out mortality is high (30-50%) and fish kills caused by oxygen depletions, algal blooms and red tides occur frequently. Disease and water pollution are also problems.

Growth performance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, fingerlings reared in Na2CO3 limed waters - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v32i3.8510 Animal Sciences
Cavalcante, Davi de Holanda; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Barros, Renan Loiola; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; UFC.
Current experiment was undertaken during 6 weeks with Nile tilapia, Oreochomis niloticus, fingerlings (1.28 &plusmn; 0.03 g) to assess the effects of moderate Na2CO3 liming on water quality and fish growth performance. Twenty-four 25 L-aquaria, with 15 fish per aquarium, were used, of which twelve aquaria were placed in the lab’s indoor room and twelve in the outdoor area. Two types of water (clear or green) and three different water-quality managements (none, HCl acidification and Na2CO3 liming) were simultaneously evaluated in a 3 x 2 factorial design. Total ammonia, calcium hardness, pH and total alkalinity in the green water aquaria were significantly higher than rates in the clear water aquaria. Slight liming acid water with Na2CO3 did not produce...

High levels of total ammonia nitrogen as NH4+ are stressful and harmful to the growth of Nile tilapia juveniles - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.17291 Biological Sciences
Silva, Francisco Jackes Rodrigues da; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Lima, Francisco Roberto dos Santos; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Vale, Diego Alves do; Universidade Federal do Ceará; Sá, Marcelo Vinícius do Carmo e; Universidade Federal do Ceará.
This study determined whether high levels of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) as NH4+ are harmful to the growth performance of Nile tilapia juveniles. Fingerlings (0.31 ± 0.04 g) were assigned to 30 polyethylene 100-L tanks in a roofed room for 12 rearing weeks. There were increasing levels of TAN by increased NH4Cl application rates (0.0; 0.25 and 0.50 g tank-1 week-1) at three conditions of water pH (acidic, 6.2 ± 0.5; neutral, 7.2 ± 0.8 and alkaline, 8.8 ± 0.3). The application of HCl to acidic tanks caused 100% of TAN to be converted into NH4+. The poorest growth performance results were observed for the alkaline tanks subjected to the highest application of NH4Cl. In acidic tanks, fish survival has dropped in those tanks under the highest application rate...

Hormone-induced spawning of cultured tropical finfishes. ArchiMer
Marte, C.
Commercially important tropical freshwater and marine finfishes are commonly spawned with pituitary homogenate, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and semi-purified fish gonadotropins. These preparations are often administered in two doses, a lower priming dose followed a few hours later by a higher resolving dose. Interval between the first and second injections may vary from 3-24 hours depending on the species. Variable doses are used even for the same species and may be due to variable potencies of the gonadotropin preparations.

Induced spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus: use of multivariate and univariate analysis methods in the search for side effects of LH-RHa treatments and ovarian development state upon spawn quality ArchiMer
Gardes, Lionel; Villanove, Philippe; Buchet, Vincent; Fauvel, Christian.
The present work examines the usefulness of the combination of multivariate analyses and further one-way analysis of variance in the search for links between causes and effects in heterologous stimulation of spawning in fish. Stimulations with both 20 and 50 mu g . kg(-1) doses of [D Trp(6)] luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LH-RHa) were effective in inducing and synchronizing spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus. Oocyte development monitoring using ovarian biopsy allowed treatment injections at different stages of maturation. The influence at stimulation time of female oocyte development state upon further development was shown. An interesting potential of second stimulation, leading to high quality spawns, was established and factors...
